Repetitive Revision The more times you revise topics learnt, the higher the chances that facts and information learnt will be kept in your long term memory. This basically means you will remember better and for a longer period of time. Study or revision needs to be done consistently to maximise its effectiveness and ensure what you have learnt is stored in your long-term memory and not just in short-term memory. Studies of the human brain have found that it takes repetitive revision of at least 5 times to ensure facts are captured in long-term memory, therefore helping you remember what you’ve learned. Revision intervals recommended are: 1st time learning a new topic (e.g. lesson in class) 2nd revision Within 24 hours 3rd revision Within 7 days of lesson in class 4th revision Within 30 days of lesson in class 5th revision Within 100 days of lesson in class 2. Optimise intervals of free time (masa curi ayam) Short intervals of time between your daily activities such as while queuing up for food in the canteen, waiting for your parents or the school bus to pick you up or even while sitting on the bus, are the best times for quick and effective revision. These quick, on-the-go study moments are effective as you are normally more relaxed. This allows your brain to be more focussed and function effectively. You are also not forcing yourself to digest large amounts of information at one sitting. The best types of revision materials that you can have for quick-on-the-go revision are study cards or short notes. You obviously need something handy as most of the time you will not find a proper study desk and chair during these on-the-go intervals. 3. Divide and conquer technique Do not attempt to study too many things at one time. Break or divide essential concepts or facts that you really need to remember into smaller chunks or clusters, such as of in groups of 10. This is simply because the things that you have learned or revised will always be automatically kept in your short term memory before in can be transferred and kept in your long term memory. In other words, whatever you have revised will not be properly and effectively stored in your long term memory, unless it is first effectively stored in your short term memory. Some studies have shown that the short term memory can only store about 7 ± 2 bits of information at a time. Study cards and short notes are therefore extremely useful as they provide you with manageable portions of information on each page. 4. Visualise your revision Our brains consist of two parts – the left brain and the right brain. As most of the readily available revision materials are presented in text, numbers and symbols, only our left brain is utilised to help us process the information we take in. Stimulating elements such visuals, colours, graphs, charts, timelines and even pop-quizzes will help to activate your right brain. Engaging the right brain, which at most times is not used, will definitely enhance memory as you now have both sides of the brains working to help you retain and recall information effectively. 5. Practice active output learning Input learning Input learning refers to the process of taking-in information into our brains. This process takes place when you listen to your teacher in the classroom, read textbooks and revision guides or even surfing the Internet. Output learning Output learning requires you to “use” the information that you have taken-in from input learning. Activities that we can do for active output learning include drills and practices, doing past-year examination questions or model test papers, group discussions, creating short-notes and making mind-maps. Input and output learning Effective revision requires both input and output learning. If input learning does not take place, you will not have information or knowledge for you to carry out active learning. There are many ways that you can make your input learning more effective. For example you can create mind-maps every time you have completed reading one sub-topic or full topic of your revision guides. You can also use short notes or readily available study cards to help you “reflect” and reinforce the things that you have just revised. Output learning requires you to “produce”, “present” and “apply” what you have taken-in from your input learning.
